Many uses of Lemons

Aside from the many health benefits of lemons (see our previous blog Health Benefits of Lemons), there are also many household uses for lemons and lemon juice.

The following are just a few.

Stain Remover. Remove berry juice stains and sweat stains from clothes by rubbing lemon juice onto the fabric. Remove ink stains with a paste of lemon juice and cream of tartar.  Bring whiteness back to cotton socks by boiling them in water with a slice of lemon. Combine lemon juice with salt to remove mildew and rust.

Health and Hygiene. Relieve a sore throat or bad breath by gargling with lemon juice. Make hair shine by rinsing it with lemon juice after washing. Settle an upset stomach by sucking on a lemon.

In the Kitchen. Dip a cloth in lemon juice to clean discoloured utensils. Bring the shine back to your chinaware by scouring with a mixture of one part lemon juice and two parts salt. Clean copper pots by rubbing with half a lemon coated with salt. Rinse with hot water, and polish dry.

Get Rid of Odours. Freshen the air by simmering sliced lemons in water for about an hour. Remove fish or onion odor from your hands by rubbing them with fresh lemons. Remove odours from wooden rolling pins, bowls, or cutting boards by rubbing with a piece of lemon.

Restore Furniture. Make your own furniture polish by mixing one part lemon juice and two parts olive oil. To remove scratches on furniture, mix equal parts of lemon juice and salad oil, and rub it on the scratches with a soft cloth.

Protect Your Garden. Bury lemon and orange rinds just under the surface of the soil to deter squirrels and cats from digging in the garden. Do this periodically throughout the spring and summer.
